Festivals Tour

Festivals in the Land of the Thunder Dragon are vibrant and joyful manifestations of the country's ancient Buddhist culture. In honor of Guru Rinpoche, the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan in the eighth century, these festivals are held in all districts. Tsechus last up to four days and are held on auspicious days and months in the Bhutanese calendar, during which a series of highly stylized masked dance rituals are performed.

Festivals are also important family and social gatherings. People dress up in their finest clothes and the most opulent coral and turquoise jewelry. They bring picnic lunches in traditional bamboo baskets and spend the entire day at festivals held in dzongs (fortresses) or monasteries.
